Hitchhiking: opportunities and risks
For those who truly love to travel, no defaults, strikes by railroad workers, or waiting at airports are scary. After all, you can travel much more romantic, bolder and cheaper – hitchhiking.
From the first conscious desire to try hitchhiking for myself to its embodiment, it took me 5-6 years. For me it was an experience of new communication with the outside world. With confidence in him. Total. I share my discoveries that this way of exploring the world has presented to me.
5 reasons to hitchhike:
A completely new, driving sensation of suspense.
A way of communication with the world, previously unknown, is complete trust and understanding that everything will be as it should.
Non-attachment to the route and cash.
Unique stories from different people told during the journey.
The magic of the Spirit and the Universe, when everything is obtained in the best possible way, without expectations and constructions of the mind.
Tips for Beginners
Decide on the place where you want to get, carefully review the route of movement – roads, paths, trails. Not always the shortest path is the fastest. The easiest and fastest way to travel on motorways. But someday they end, and you need to choose a route in order to drive the longest distance to the final destination on the autobahn.
When folding your backpack, remember that it’s not always possible to go – you have to go. And the lighter the burden, the bigger and faster the right distance will go. Take only the essentials. Usually I take a minimum of things: a sleeping bag, a karemat, washing accessories, a knife, a flashlight, and food. Products should not be perishable: oatmeal (pour into a plastic bottle for convenience and compactness), lard, bread, a soft pack of condensed milk, dates, nuts, a thermos with tea that can be poured several times (for example, good Chinese Te Guanin).
Where to catch a ride
A place to stop a ride – an important point. This should be a flat stretch of road, preferably with a curb. A great place if there is a church or temple near the road, speed bumps where drivers slow down, thereby increasing the chances of leaving.
Where drivers do not stop – on the slopes and ascents, behind sharp turns, near the posts of the traffic police and gas stations. When you can’t stop the passing car for a long time, a change of place will help. It is better to go in the direction of travel, to the next convenient site.
The phrase addressed to the driver: “Can you give me a ride (can I drive with you) some kilometers in this direction?”
With rare exceptions, after such a phrase you may be asked for money. This has not happened to me.
In a conversation with the driver, you won’t be silent. They stop in the hope of an interesting conversation. There can be many reasons – not to fall asleep, not to be bored, to learn new things. Categorically in conversations should not touch on the themes of politics, wars, issues of religion and faith, musical preferences, argue.
With each new car, the driver is told the same story. It runs in, becomes richer, livelier, more interesting. In response, you get different stories about everything every time. Do not want to talk a lot – ask yourself. About those places you want to visit, about where a person is from, listen to his stories. People willingly get involved in a conversation and share different things with a random fellow traveler. Here you can get advice or vice versa give it. The Universe always brings us precisely with those people that we need or someone who needs us.
Hitchhiking means that there is no money or they are very limited. In my case, moving on a big wagon for about 500 km., The driver in the parking lot fed me a hot dog, although I refused, and even treated me with homemade wine. I recommend not to drink alcohol while moving.
How easy to find a ride
It’s easier to ride couples – a guy and a girl. There may be problems with a large number of people, so it is better to break into groups and stop cars at a distance from each other.
It’s good to go on the track in the morning. At this time, truckers and those traveling far leave early, and the chances are that the right car will stop.
For the first experience, it is undesirable to go out at night. If the path is long and night movements are possible, it is safe to wear light clothing, and fine if there are reflective stripes on it. So a person can be seen from afar.
It’s easier to move around in summer than in winter. And the day is longer, and at least clothes are taken.
Share your stories with fellow travelers. Listen carefully to their stories, there you can suddenly find out the answers to your questions and a lot of interesting information about the place where you are going, if you ask the right questions.
Things to remember when hitchhiking:
Choose a place to stop vehicles with a curb. Do not stand near the edge of the road, with a “chipper” behind your back.
When the car stops, look around the passenger compartment and the driver. Do not get in the car if you smell alcohol.
